AKEL Demands Resignation and Transparency Following Controversial Video

AKEL has characterized the video allegedly containing recordings of conversations between foreign businessmen and associates of the President of Cyprus as a case that raises serious political, ethical, and institutional issues, exposing the President and his inner circle. The party is demanding the immediate dismissal and removal of the Director of the Presidential Office, Charalambous, as well as the abolition of the Fund of the President's wife, Philippa Karsera, with full disclosure of the donors. Furthermore, AKEL is calling on the parties supporting the government to distance themselves from such practices and pledges to promote legislative proposals to enhance transparency and accountability. The party will submit bills to abolish the First Lady's Fund and will add amendments to already submitted legislative proposals. The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, called on the competent authorities – the Attorney General, the Anti-Corruption Authority, and the Police – to take action and investigate the matter ex officio. He emphasized that this case is not limited to the party's current intervention, but is the beginning of a series of actions. Finally, Mr. Stefanou warned that the government should not attempt to hide the truth, but face directly the practices that, he said, corrupt Cyprus, as this will have a negative impact on its international image.
