AKEL MP Criticizes Government's Stance on MERCOSUR Agreement, Warns of Negative Impacts

AKEL MP Yannakis Gavriel strongly criticizes the Christodoulides government for its position on the MERCOSUR agreement, warning of the serious consequences it will have on Cypriot agriculture and livestock farming, as well as food security. According to Mr. Gavriel, this agreement serves the interests of multinational corporations at the expense of farmers and consumers. He points out that the massive import of agricultural products from MERCOSUR countries, with lower production and control standards, will create unfair competition for Cypriot farmers and undermine their income. He also expresses concerns about food safety, as many pesticides and antibiotics used in MERCOSUR countries are prohibited in the EU. Mr. Gavriel states that the Christodoulides government's positive attitude towards the agreement is unjustified, given the existing sustainability problems of Cypriot agriculture due to increased production costs and water scarcity. Instead of defending the interests of farmers, the government chooses to align itself with multinationals. AKEL has scheduled an emergency meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture next Wednesday, where relevant Ministers will be called upon to explain the studies that led to the government's decision to support the MERCOSUR agreement.
