AKEL Protests US Intervention in Venezuela Outside US Embassy

Published January 5, 2026, 16:22

Citizens gathered outside the US Embassy in Nicosia, at the call of AKEL and the Pan-Cypriot Peace Council, to protest the US intervention in Venezuela and the "kidnapping" of elected President Nicolas Maduro. AKEL condemned the intervention as a blatant violation of international law and the internal affairs of a sovereign state. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou emphasized that no justification can legitimize the intervention, rejecting arguments about combating dictatorship or drug trafficking. Mr. Stefanou argued that the real goal of the US is the exploitation of Venezuela's rich oil deposits. He pointed out that if the protection of democracy was the real purpose, the US should have intervened in other countries with authoritarian regimes, but which are its allies. The protest highlights AKEL's opposition to US foreign policy and its support for the principles of international law and state sovereignty.
