Archbishop: Elections for New Bishop of Paphos in 3-4 Months

Published January 24, 2026, 09:24

The Archbishop of Cyprus announced that the elections for the new Bishop of Paphos are expected to be completed within 3-4 months. The process will be simplified with changes to the Statute, avoiding the involvement of the laity and potential tensions. The Holy Synod will have the primary say in the election, considering the 'pulse of the people' without self-interest. Anyone wishing to do so can submit their candidacy after the new Regulations are drawn up. Regarding the former Bishop of Tychikos, the Archbishop expressed regret for his refusal to sign the creed and for his repeated appeals to the courts. He left open the possibility of his return to the priestly office, on the condition of a change of attitude. The Archbishop dismissed accusations of damage to the credibility of the Church, arguing that the Church had prevented schisms and strengthened its image. He condemned manifestations of zealotry and attempts to exploit international ecclesiastical tensions. The statements were made after an Archiepiscopal Divine Liturgy, emphasizing the importance of unity and stability in the Church of Cyprus. The upcoming change to the Statute marks a new era for the election of Bishops, with an emphasis on transparency and the avoidance of divisions.
