Archbishop Georgios on Tychikos: He is Led Astray - Return Only with Change of Attitude

The Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios, expects the procedures for the election of a new Metropolitan of Paphos to be completed within 3-4 months, after the approval of the new Statute. The new Statute will simplify the election process, without the involvement of the laity. The Archbishop emphasized that the new process will avoid the tensions and confrontations that had arisen in the past. The Holy Synod will be able to assess candidacies without external pressures and promote suitable candidates. Regarding the former Metropolitan Tychikos, the Archbishop stated that he did not respond to the opportunity to sign the creed and repeatedly appealed to both the civil court and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He expressed the opinion that Tychikos is being led astray by others and that his return to office depends on a change of attitude. The Archbishop rejected accusations that the Tychikos case damages the prestige of the Church of Cyprus, arguing that the Church reacted promptly to prevent potential divisions and maintain its unity.
