Astronomical Amount in Waste: Over €70 Million Cost for 71 Landfills in Nicosia and Limassol

Cyprus is working to resolve the chronic problem of 71 landfills in the provinces of Nicosia and Limassol, at a total cost of over €70 million. After the successful restoration of landfills in the provinces of Paphos, Larnaca and Famagusta, attention is now turning to these two provinces, where the situation remains critical. The European Commission has already referred Cyprus to the European Court of Justice for non-compliance with the waste landfill directive, threatening financial sanctions. The Commission stresses that Cyprus has not implemented the Court's 2013 decision and has repeatedly postponed compliance schedules. In Nicosia, there are 24 landfills to be restored, with work at Kotsiatis, the largest site, already underway and expected to be completed in February 2026. In Limassol, there are 47 landfills, with work on 19 expected to begin in early 2026 and be completed in the summer of 2027. The biggest problem remains the Vati landfill, along with another 27 smaller sites, due to the need for additional infrastructure projects. Despite the challenges, the government has committed to the European Commission to strictly adhere to the restoration schedule, in order to avoid further sanctions and ensure public health and the environment.
