Attorney General: Fate of Uncontrolled Power Regulation Lies with Parliament

The Attorney General, George Savvides, stated that the Legal Service has presented its position regarding the regulation of the Attorney General's uncontrolled power and that the decision now rests with the House of Representatives. The discussion on the issue is ongoing, without reaching a specific outcome, and constitutionally the authority for regulation belongs to the legislative branch. During the session of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, both the bill from the Ministry of Justice and the proposal from Diko MP Christiana Erotokritou were discussed. The main difference between the two is that the government bill provides for the review of the Attorney General's decisions after a possible separation of the office, while Ms. Erotokritou's proposal directly concerns the review of the Attorney General's decisions, regardless of the separation. The Attorney General reiterated his constitutional reservations regarding the separation of the office, emphasizing that such a change should be carefully considered. At the same time, he mentioned that the Supreme Court has expressed concerns due to its increased workload. He stressed the importance of any act of control or review of decisions being made at the level of the Supreme Court and underlined the need to resolve the issue with the correct procedure and at the correct level, in order to create a strong and indisputable system of control for the future.
