Attorney General: Initiative by MPs to Limit Immunity is Important

Attorney General Giorgos Savvides expressed his satisfaction with the initiative of the House Legal Committee to bring the issue of limiting parliamentary immunity back for discussion. The bill, which has been pending for years, concerns the determination of the rights that need to be protected when exercising parliamentary duties. Savvides emphasized that the initiative came from the MPs themselves, which he considers particularly important. The discussion focused on the need to distinguish between offenses related to the performance of a MP's duties and those that are not, in order to avoid interference with parliamentary work. The case of MP Nikos Syka was also mentioned, however the Attorney General avoided commenting on cases pending before the courts.
