A Bangladesh committee investigating disappearances during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated that at least 287 people are believed to be dead. The committee found that some bodies were dumped in rivers, such as the Buriganga River in Dhaka, or buried in mass graves. The investigation, which followed Hasina's overthrow in August 2024, examined 1,569 abduction cases, with the victims primarily belonging to Islamist and nationalist opposition parties. The committee recommended forensic examinations to identify the bodies and the collection of DNA samples from families. Hasina has been sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity.
