Berlin Cautious on Trump-Zelensky Meeting, Concerned about Russia

Germany is appearing cautious regarding the outcome of the Trump-Zelensky meeting in Miami, while also expressing concern about Russia. The Chancellery welcomes Trump's efforts for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, but emphasizes that it must respect Ukraine's sovereignty and European security. It also points out that Russia is responsible for ending the war. Chancellor Scholz had initially refrained from commenting on the meeting, limiting himself to his previous statements regarding Europe's unwavering support for Ukraine. According to reports, the subsequent video conference with European leaders and Canada was held in a “reasonable atmosphere”. However, optimism about a possible peace in Ukraine dominates the German press, although it is pointed out that the fundamental problems, such as the territorial issue, remain. Some commentators argue that Trump once again showed a predisposition towards Putin. Germany remains committed to the need to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia, with the help of the EU, as the only way to progress for both countries towards Europe.
