“Between Euphoria and Death”: GBL Found in Water Coolers?

The case of butyrolactone found in a water cooler in Larnaca has raised concerns. The substance, a natural chemical compound found in low concentrations in certain foods, is metabolized in the body into GHB, a potent central nervous system depressant. The line between a euphoric dose and a toxic one is extremely thin, with the risk of coma and death, especially in elderly individuals. Dr. Nikolaos Dietis, Associate Professor of Pharmacology, emphasized that the presence of the substance in a water cooler is a serious issue, as even a small amount (about 5 milliliters) can cause significant health problems. The investigation should focus on whether the substance was found directly in the water or through an intermediate source, such as ice cubes. If the substance originates from the water cooler itself, then the problem is much larger, as it would require the introduction of significant quantities of the substance, which is not typically found in such machines. The professor ruled out the possibility that the substance is part of the mechanism or operating fluids of the cooler. Butyrolactone is known for its abusive use as a drug, as it is one of the most commonly used illegal substances in Europe. The case in Larnaca is being investigated in depth to determine the source of the contamination and prevent further risks to public health.
