Bold Reforms for the Church of Cyprus

The Church of Cyprus is at a critical juncture, with Archbishop Georgios II seeking bold reforms to address modern challenges. A key element of this effort is the improvement of the Statutory Charter, with a proposal for the direct election of metropolitans by the Holy Synod, limiting the involvement of the laity in the election of the Head of the Church. The aim is to avoid fanaticism and polarization in church elections, as well as to ensure the spiritual integrity of the process. At the same time, the Archbishop identifies "sick zeal" as one of the greatest internal threats to the Church, prioritizing a spiritual and authentic discourse. This effort is complemented by a broad vision of social and spiritual contribution, with the creation of a Palliative Care Unit, model schools, and the implementation of plans to address declining birth rates. On the national issue, the Archbishop expresses a clear position, claiming the right of the Church to have a say, without rejecting the institutional role of the President, but also rejecting foreign models of solution that do not take into account the rights of Cypriot Hellenism. His leadership seeks a balance between spiritual guidance and active participation in social and national affairs. Overall, the Archbishop's policy is characterized by strength, foresight, and a determination to break the shackles of the past, promoting a renewed and dynamic Church, capable of responding to the needs of modern society and safeguarding the identity and tradition of the Cypriot people.
