Bolsonaro Undergoes Third Surgery for Persistent Hiccups

Published December 30, 2025, 21:12

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro underwent a third surgery on Tuesday to treat persistent hiccups that have been plaguing him. The 70-year-old Bolsonaro had already undergone two previous surgeries for the same problem, as well as a previous operation for a hernia. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, announced the new surgery via Instagram, stating that doctors proceeded with it after the hiccups reappeared in the morning. Bolsonaro had been released from prison last week, where he was serving a 27-year sentence for attempted coup, in order to undergo surgery for the hernia. The hiccups appear to be a complication from the injury Bolsonaro sustained in 2018, when he was stabbed during his election campaign. Since then, he has been hospitalized several times due to health problems caused by the attack. The state of Bolsonaro's health is being closely monitored, while the third surgery highlights the seriousness of the problem and the need for further medical care.
