Bulgaria: Smooth Transition to Euro Ensured, Says Banking Association

The Bulgarian Banking Association (ABB) announced that the transition to the euro on January 1st was carried out smoothly and without problems. ATMs and POS terminals of banks were already processing transactions in euros immediately after midnight. Banks had deposited over 1 billion leva and automatically converted account balances to euros at the official exchange rate, without charges. Until the end of June, banks will exchange currency for free. The ABB stated that the banking sector invested over €200 million in adapting its systems for the smooth transition, describing the accession to the Eurozone as a historic step for Bulgaria's development.
