Can Cats Catch a Cold? What Owners Need to Know

During the winter months, cats can exhibit symptoms that resemble a cold, which are actually upper respiratory infections. These infections are highly contagious, especially in kittens, elderly cats, or animals with weakened immune systems. The transmission occurs through direct contact, such as licking or sharing spaces. The viruses that cause these infections remain in the cat's body in a latent form and can be reactivated during periods of stress. In most cases, healthy cats recover on their own within 7-10 days. However, it is important to avoid administering medication without veterinary guidance. Distinguishing between allergies and a cold is important, as the symptoms can be similar. The treatment of mild cases includes supportive care, such as a warm and quiet environment, good humidity, gentle cleaning of the eyes and nose, and adequate hydration. In more severe cases, veterinary care is required.
