Cardiovascular Diseases Remain Leading Cause of Death in Cyprus

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in Cyprus, although the percentage of deaths attributed to them has decreased from 40% to 24%. 87% of cardiovascular deaths occur in individuals over the age of 65, with the most common causes being myocardial infarction, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. The Minister of Health emphasized the importance of prevention through lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, healthy eating, and regular exercise. Furthermore, he referred to the new EU plan, "Safe Hearts Plan," which aims to strengthen prevention, early diagnosis, and effective management of cardiovascular diseases. The Cypriot Government fully supports the plan and aligns its own actions with it. The Ministry of Health is investing in strengthening primary and secondary prevention, upgrading the healthcare system with modern tools, and supporting research and innovation in the field of cardiovascular health. Collaboration with the scientific community is crucial for the implementation of scientifically sound policies. The National Strategy for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases has already been approved, including a comprehensive framework for prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and research. The symposium co-organized by the Medical School of the European University of Cyprus and other organizations is a significant initiative to promote cardiovascular health.
