The inauguration ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU concluded with enthusiastic applause, showcasing an impressive performance with the participation of over 100 artists. Directed by Kostas Silvestros, the event aimed to highlight Cypriot culture, its historical past, present, and hopes for a peaceful future. The ceremony included music, dance, poetry, sculpture, and visual arts, with references to antiquity, the Turkish invasion, and the desire for reunification. Emphasis was placed on the history of Cyprus and its path towards EU membership, while simultaneously condemning the division of the island. The presentation of the artwork “Alasia” by street artist Twenty Three, walking on barbed wire, symbolized the Turkish invasion. Turkish Cypriot artist Nurtane Karagil presented a work depicting a united Cyprus with blossoming almond trees, expressing hope for peace and reconciliation. The ceremony began with a slight delay due to the arrival of the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. Greetings followed from the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The speakers emphasized the importance of peace, stability, and solidarity in Europe and the need for the reunification of Cyprus. The event was an attempt to present Cyprus as a country that combines tradition with innovation and that can play a significant role in the European Union. The presentation of Cyprus as a hub for tech startups, alongside references to its ancient history, underscored this dual identity. The ceremony closed with the highlighting of hope for a better future for Cyprus and for all of Europe.
