Chaos in Iran: Protesters Burn Regime Buildings as Internet Access is Restricted

Protests continue for the 12th day in Iran, with intense clashes between protesters and security forces using tear gas and live fire. The protests began as a reaction to the economic crisis and the fall of the rial, but have evolved into a broader movement of protest against the regime. Protesters are burning regime buildings in cities such as Tehran and Mashhad, where an incident also occurred involving a car driving into security forces. The government of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is attempting to suppress the protests while simultaneously facing economic difficulties and pressure from international sanctions and regional instability. Authorities accuse protesters of being "rioters" and warn of no leniency towards those arrested. One police officer was killed in clashes with protesters west of Tehran. In an effort to limit the organization and spread of the protests, the regime is reportedly cutting off internet access, a tactic it has used in the past, such as during the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. This move has raised concerns about freedom of speech and access to information. Iranian President Masoud Pezeskian has called on security forces to exercise "maximum restraint" in dealing with the protests, while also urging the avoidance of violence. However, the situation remains tense and clashes continue in various parts of the country.
