China Opens World's Longest Road Tunnel at 2,000-Meter Altitude

China inaugurated the Tianshan Shengli tunnel on December 26, 2025, which, at 22.13 kilometers long, is now the world's longest road tunnel. Part of the G0711 highway, the tunnel traverses the Tianshan Mountains in the Xinjiang region, connecting the north and south of the country. Its construction presented a significant technical challenge due to the area's geological instability and large temperature fluctuations, with entrances located at an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters. The new tunnel replaces a former mountain pass that was frequently closed during the winter months, drastically reducing travel time from three hours to just twenty minutes. This enables year-round connectivity between the north and south, significantly improving transportation in the region. The tunnel consists of two separate tunnels, each with multiple lanes of traffic. Constructors paid particular attention to addressing user anxiety and claustrophobia, creating special effects on the tunnel's dome to give the impression of driving in open space. The tunnel is equipped with modern ventilation, lighting, emergency, and monitoring systems that meet Chinese safety standards for large mountain tunnels. The project, which began in mid-2020, has a significant impact on the region's economy, facilitating trade between northern industrial centers and southern agricultural areas. It is also part of a broader state program to develop infrastructure in western China and connect remote regions. The Tianshan Shengli tunnel surpasses the length of the Gotthard (Switzerland) and Yamate (Tokyo) tunnels, while the Norwegian Lærdal tunnel remains the longest road tunnel, but is not part of a highway.
