Christodoulides: Electricity Interconnection is a Geostrategic Project and is Proceeding in Practice

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that the Cyprus-Israel-Europe electricity interconnection is being treated as a project of geostrategic importance and is being actively promoted. He made this statement in response to questions regarding the matter, following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Cyprus's role in the IMEC corridor. President Christodoulides emphasized the ongoing communication with the Greek Prime Minister on the issue, as well as their agreement on the obligations arising from the implementation of the project and the need to update the studies due to international interest. Responding to statements by the President of DIKO, Nikola Papadopoulos, President Christodoulides reiterated the government's commitment to implementing the interconnection. He also denied reports of a possible reaction from the European Commission to a potential prioritization of the Israel-Cyprus interconnection. The government is in the final stages of awarding the update of the project's feasibility study, aiming to incorporate new developments and increased international interest. This update is considered essential to ensure the optimal utilization of the opportunities presented. President Christodoulides stressed the importance of the project for Cyprus, not only at the energy level but also as a significant step in strengthening its geostrategic position in the region. The interconnection is expected to contribute to Europe's energy security and Cyprus's economic development.
