Clash Between Police Chief and Unions over Work Schedule Changes

A decision by the Police Chief to change the work schedule of officers working in shifts has sparked strong reactions and was discussed in the Parliamentary Legal Committee. Unions are denouncing the reform as "unilateral," expressing concerns about the rest, morale, and benefits of personnel. Police Chief Themistos Arnautis defended his decision, citing Article 8 of the Police Law and arguing that alignment with the Public Service schedule is a long-standing request. The Chief stressed that the change is necessary for the modernization of the Police, covering operational needs, European standards, health and safety issues, as well as increased demands due to the Cyprus Presidency of the EU. He argued that the reform is not aimed against police officers, but at strengthening operational readiness. He also referred to expert studies supporting the adjustment of schedules. The ISOTITA union strongly disagreed, characterizing the decision as an "attack on morale" and emphasizing that resorting to the Justice was the only way forward. They rejected claims of increased productivity, arguing that total working hours remain the same, while rest days and benefits are reduced. The discussion highlighted the deep disagreement between the Police leadership and the unions regarding the improvement of the Force's operation and the protection of the rights of police officers. The government is reportedly supporting the Chief's decision, considering it necessary to achieve its goals.
