Commissioner Condemns Inappropriate Treatment of Sea Turtle by Chlorakas Community Council Employees

The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, has described as “unacceptable” the behavior of employees of the Chlorakas Community Council towards a sea turtle, as captured in a video that has been circulating. The Commissioner stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, but she has reviewed the video and believes that even if the turtle was dead, the treatment was inappropriate. According to procedures, in the event of finding a live or dead turtle, the local authority must be notified immediately, and in the case of a dead turtle, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research must be informed to investigate the cause of death and ensure proper burial. The Commissioner noted that local authority employees often cite the weight of the turtles or lack of knowledge about proper handling, resulting in incidents of hasty burial on the beach. Specific instructions and protocols from the Department of Fisheries must be followed. The Commissioner stressed the need for training of local authority staff, as such behavior undermines efforts to protect marine life and is inconsistent with the respect we owe to protected species. In the event of finding a live turtle, the Commissioner recommended immediate notification of the Department of Fisheries, which is responsible for collecting and potentially treating the animal.
