Continued Trouble for Passengers After Blackout at Greek Airports

Published January 5, 2026, 17:17

Passengers are experiencing great inconvenience after yesterday's blackout at Greek airports. Baggage is being returned to homes and hotels, while many travelers remain at their destinations, trying to find a return ticket, with flights being very full due to the peak holiday season. Aegean fully implemented Regulation (EC) 261/2004, offering alternative flights or a full refund to affected passengers, as well as free accommodation in hotels, transportation and meals. The company provided 1682 rooms in hotels in Athens and 677 in hotels in the rest of the network. Sky Express canceled only two flights, while proceeding with the implementation of the rest of the flight schedule with minor modifications. The company stated that its operational mechanism reacted immediately and with rapid decisions, with absolute priority given to passenger safety. Despite the efforts of the airlines, passenger inconvenience continues, especially for those who were forced to stay at their destinations and cover their own accommodation and food expenses.
