Costa: Europe Does Not Accept Violations of International Law in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine and Gaza

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, stated during the launch of the Cypriot Presidency that the European Union cannot accept violations of international law in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, or Gaza. He emphasized the importance of the Cypriot Presidency in supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine and promoting European integration. Costa mentioned that Cyprus brings a unique perspective due to its geographical location, as a Mediterranean island state at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and that it understands the importance of building bridges and strengthening dialogue. He expressed the EU's support for Ukraine, characterizing the Russian invasion as a blatant violation of international law. Furthermore, Costa stressed that the EU will remain a steadfast defender of international law and multilateralism, emphasizing that unilateral action leads to conflict. He referred to the history of Cyprus, with its occupation and division, as an example of the importance of international law for peace and stability. Regarding Greenland, Costa stated that it belongs to its people and that no decision can be made for Denmark and Greenland without the consent of both countries. The EU expresses its full solidarity with the people of Greenland.
