Crisis in the Church of Cyprus: Bishop Tychikos' Appeal to Civil Courts Deemed Disobedience

The Church of Cyprus is facing a serious crisis as Bishop Tychikos has appealed to civil courts regarding the Metropolis of Paphos. The Holy Synod considers this move an act of disobedience, as Bishop Tychikos challenges the Synod's decision and bypasses the advice of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which called on him to comply. The matter is expected to be discussed in an emergency meeting tomorrow, Thursday. Archbishopric Spokesman Christakis Eustathiou stated that the Church of Cyprus resolves its issues internally and there is no precedent for a civil court overturning a synodal decision. Bishop Tychikos has expressed his intention not to attend tomorrow's meeting of the Holy Synod, while also declaring his respect for its members. The Holy Synod will also consider changes and improvements to the Church's Statutory Charter, with the aim of making it more flexible in decision-making and the administration of justice. The decision to be taken tomorrow is expected to put an end to the issue of Bishop Tychikos, reaffirming the Church's independence from civil courts.
