Critical Water Levels in Cyprus Dams Despite Rainfall

Published December 30, 2025, 08:36

Water inflow into Cyprus' dams is critical, despite recent rainfall, according to the Head Technical Engineer of the Water Development Department. Since October 1st, the total inflow amounts to only 1.7 million cubic meters, an insignificant amount compared to needs. Dam levels continue to decline as consumption exceeds inflow. A mean annual inflow of 10-12 million cubic meters is required for substantial improvement, while the average of the last 30-35 years is 13 million. Rainfall was higher in coastal areas, where there are no dams, and not in the mountainous catchment areas. Prolonged, torrential rains in the mountains are needed to reverse the situation. A call for water conservation, as drought is a recurring phenomenon and is worsening with climate change.
