Cypriot Consumer Association: Consumers Oppose €3 Fee on Online Purchases

The Cypriot Consumer Association strongly opposes the EU's decision to impose a €3 fee on each product imported from third countries, regardless of its value. The decision, which will take effect in the summer, primarily targeted platforms like Temu and Shein, but will burden all consumers. The Association's President, Marios Drousiotis, points out that the fee will be applied per product, not per package, making the surcharge even more difficult to bear. Mr. Drousiotis estimates that the platforms will be forced to absorb the tax cost to avoid the bureaucracy and high administrative costs that would result from the fee being imposed by customs authorities. This will lead to an increase in product prices, even for low-value items. The Consumer Association had expressed its opposition to the decision during discussions with the European Association, emphasizing that it would harm consumers. However, the decision was made taking into account the interests of traders who complain about competition from these platforms. In summary, the new EU legislation is expected to increase the cost of online purchases from third countries for Cypriot consumers, while the Consumer Association warns of potential price increases from the platforms themselves to cover the additional tax burden.
