Cypriot Presidency to Launch Trilogues on Digital Euro, Aiming for Implementation by 2029

The Cypriot Presidency is ready to launch trilogues on the digital euro later this semester, with the aim of implementing it by 2029. The Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Patsalides, stressed the need to accelerate the legislative discussion. The EU Council has already reached a general agreement, while the European Parliament is considering numerous amendments. The Cypriot Presidency seeks to achieve convergence between the co-legislators, emphasizing the importance of trust, balance and implementation for the success of the digital euro. Key issues being discussed include privacy, governance and the legal tender status. Protecting user privacy and clarity regarding the role of the digital euro as a complement to cash are critical prerequisites for public acceptance.
