Published January 5, 2026, 12:23

The Village Leader of Avlona, Menelaos Savvas, has denounced a new Turkish provocation in the Dead Zone, with Turkish settlers illegally cultivating land belonging to Greek Cypriot farmers. According to Mr. Savvas, UNFICYP is unable to uphold its mandate to maintain peace and does not provide protection to Greek Cypriots who wish to cultivate their fields. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not provided instructions on how to deal with the situation. UNFICYP reportedly stated that it cannot take action to remove the Turkish farmers, while Greek Cypriot landowners are not granted cultivation permits for security reasons. Mr. Savvas emphasized the absence of the state and the exploitation of the situation by the Turks.
