Cyprus: Increased Cases of Seasonal Viruses - "Take These Measures"

Cyprus is experiencing an increase in cases of seasonal viruses, such as the flu, due to low temperatures and holiday gatherings. Spokesperson for the Cyprus Public Health Insurance Organisation (CPHIO), Charalambos Charilaou, stated that the Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) of public hospitals have seen an increased influx of patients, particularly during the holidays, due to the leave of personal and specialist doctors. Hospitals have activated Rapid Patient Flow Clinics to efficiently serve non-emergency cases. A significant portion of hospitalised patients are individuals with comorbidities and elderly people with weakened immune systems. Mr. Charilaou advised the public to limit movement, avoid gatherings, and protect vulnerable groups, especially the elderly, even without the imposition of restrictive measures. Despite the expected increase in cases, the CPHIO assures that public hospitals are fully prepared to handle the situation and provide the necessary care. The rise in cases is directly linked to low temperatures, which lead to more people gathering in enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation. Mr. Charilaou emphasised the importance of proper ventilation of spaces during the winter months, as this reduces the risk of virus and infection transmission. The situation is being closely monitored, and authorities are ready to take further measures if necessary to protect public health.
