The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, has described the recently surfaced video concerning corruption as a serious blow to Cyprus's credibility and reputation, particularly at a critical time as the country assumes the Presidency of the European Union. She emphasized that the responsibility lies not only with political parties but also with civil society, which demands transparency and substantial policy decisions. Demetriou acknowledged the motives of the video's creators as foreign and malicious, but underscored the gravity of the revelations and the need for a thorough investigation. She deemed the subsequent resignations appropriate but stressed the need for a comprehensive action plan. The proposed action plan includes taking responsibility with specific policy decisions, a full and independent investigation by the Attorney General, and drastic changes to the Fund's structure or even its complete abolition, with the exploration of alternative ways to support students. Demetriou concluded by emphasizing the need to change what is troubling in Cyprus in order to restore public trust and uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and control. She also called on all institutions to cooperate in protecting the country's reputation.
