Cyprus Police Restricts Information Flow to Journalists

The leadership of the Cyprus Police has imposed a restriction on the flow of information to journalists, a practice that began after the change of command in 2024. This change in attitude, which is not limited to the press office, has led to greater reservation towards media representatives. The Chief of Police has already mentioned in meetings with journalists the attempt to control the transmission of information, considering some previous publications overly revealing and harmful to operational plans. Documents that have come to light show that verbal instructions have been given to officers to restrict information to the press, while two specific documents (December 2024 and November 2025) confirm the tightening of confidentiality rules during the investigation of disciplinary and criminal cases. This move raises concerns about transparency and public access to information of public interest.
