Cyprus Power Authority Presents Electricity Challenges at IRENA Conference

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) presented the challenges facing Cyprus in the electricity sector at the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi. The presentation focused on projects planned for 2026, including the installation of large-scale energy storage systems, the continued installation of smart meters, the automation of substations, and the upgrading of transmission and distribution networks to integrate more renewable energy sources. Marios Pappoutis, EAC’s Assistant Network Manager, emphasized the need for a change in culture and greater involvement of energy users in energy management and providing flexibility to the grid. Cyprus faces particular challenges due to its island nature and the need to maintain a balance between electricity supply and demand. Specifically, operating the grid on a small, isolated island requires targeted investments, energy storage, and flexibility. The lack of interconnection with other networks leads to increased use of conventional power generation to balance supply and demand, increasing the cost of electricity. The EAC committed to completing significant projects in 2026, such as the upgrade of the “Spyros Kyprianou” sports center, the reconstruction of the Nicosia Olympic Swimming Pool, and the reopening of the Geroskipou and Aglantzia swimming pools. It will also increase subsidies to sports federations and disability sports.
