Cyprus Presidency to Collaborate with EP on European Agenda

The Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the EU will work closely with the European Parliament to promote the European agenda, with a realistically ambitious and transparent approach. The event in Nicosia marks the beginning of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency, giving MPs the opportunity to shape a strong and effective EU. The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, emphasized that the Presidency brings the EU closer to Cyprus and Cyprus closer to the EU, bridging the geographical distance and highlighting the importance of the Eastern Mediterranean region. The Presidency also provides an opportunity for the EU to recognize its proximity to the region and actively participate in it. Ms. Demetriou referred to a new global reality with increasing threats to security and democracy, as well as the effects of energy insecurity, climate change, and migration flows. She stressed the need for strategic clarity, coordination, and collective action to ensure the effectiveness of the EU. Finally, Ms. Demetriou emphasized that the EU's positions and actions must be based on its fundamental values and principles, such as international law, human rights, and the rule of law. The Cypriot Presidency represents a unique opportunity for Cyprus to showcase its European identity and reaffirm its position within the EU, seeking solutions through dialogue and negotiation, with respect for international law.
