Cyprus Schengen Evaluation Report to be Adopted by Commission in Spring

The European Commission is expected to adopt the Schengen evaluation report for Cyprus this Spring, marking a significant step towards the country's inclusion in the Schengen area. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that Cyprus has made significant progress in all technical requirements, making the decision for accession a political matter to be considered by the EU Council. The Commission fully supports Cyprus's efforts, emphasizing the importance of Schengen for freedom of movement, tourism, and trade. Concurrently, the European Union is preparing for the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact in June 2026. Mr. Brunner noted that 2025 was a good year for migration and asylum policy, as illegal border crossings have decreased by more than half compared to 2023. This reduction is attributed to the implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, as well as the adoption of new measures, such as the concept of a safe third country and the common list of safe countries of origin. These measures aim to reduce pressure on national asylum systems and simplify procedures. Mr. Brunner emphasized the commitment of all 27 EU member states to implement the Pact, noting that the Commission is working closely with each country to ensure uniform application and provide the necessary technical, operational, and financial support.
