Cyprus to Receive €1.18 Billion for Defense Under EU's SAFE Initiative

The European Commission has approved the national defense plans of eight EU member states, including Cyprus, under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) initiative. Cyprus will receive €1.18 billion to strengthen its military readiness and acquire modern defense equipment. The other countries included in the first phase are Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, and Romania. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is making significant progress in the field of defense and that SAFE will mobilize up to €800 billion for defense. The first payments are expected in March 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen the European defense industrial base and ensure interoperability.
