Cyprus Votes in Favor of Mercosur – Commission Sees Opportunities

Cyprus voted in favor of the EU-Mercosur agreement, sparking reactions from agricultural organizations. The Ministry of Agriculture states that the agreement offers opportunities for Cypriot businesses and producers, facilitating access to the Mercosur market and strengthening the export of products. Farmers are concerned about unfair competition and food safety, as well as the lack of protection for halloumi, which was not included in the list of 350 PDO products protected by the agreement. However, the Ministry assures that there is a possibility of revising the list and that the agreement already protects certain Cypriot products such as Geroskipou loukoumi, Commandaria, and Zivania.
