Danish Foreign Minister Welcomes Trump's Assurance Against Forceful Greenland Acquisition

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that Donald Trump's assurance against using force to acquire Greenland is positive, but emphasized that the US President's desire to obtain the island remains unchanged. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump ruled out the use of force for the first time, but reiterated his intention to begin negotiations for the US to acquire Greenland. Rasmussen reaffirmed Denmark's position that Greenland is not for sale and that the future of its people is non-negotiable. He also referred to an agreement reached during a meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on January 14th in Washington. The agreement provides for high-level discussions to determine whether American concerns can be addressed without violating Denmark's 'red lines'. Rasmussen stressed that Denmark will not negotiate by abandoning fundamental principles. The Danish Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of international law, the sovereignty of states, and the right of peoples to self-determination, emphasizing that these are the principles governing the international order and in the building of which the US contributed after World War II.
