Death of Yiannis Xylouris, Brother of Nikos Xylouris, Plunges Crete into Mourning

Deep mourning prevails in Crete following the death of Yiannis Xylouris, also known as Psaroyiannis, at the age of 83. The deceased was the brother of the legendary Nikos Xylouris and Psarantonis, and belonged to the historic Xylouris family, which has left an indelible mark on the Cretan musical tradition for four generations. Psaroyiannis was born in Anogia in 1943 and showed his musical talent from a young age. He began with the mandolin and then turned to the laouto and lyra, learning from the best musicians of his time. At the age of 12, he began accompanying his brother, Nikos Xylouris, on the laouto, and at the age of 14 he made his first recording with him. He was quickly recognized as one of the best laouto players in Crete, collaborating with the most famous lyra players on the island. Yiannis Xylouris did not limit himself to the laouto, but also engaged with the lyra, singing, and composing, creating modern Cretan songs with strong artistic value. His musical presence was significant, with numerous concerts and performances in Greece and abroad.
