Deepfake Disinformation: How a Digital Puppet Caused an Uproar

A video circulating online has sparked controversy, allegedly revealing a corruption mechanism within the Presidential Office. However, research from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) indicates that the image in the video was likely generated using artificial intelligence (AI), with an 83% probability. The source of the video, a website called “The Thinking Conservative,” is owned by a company in Wyoming, USA, with unclear activities and is linked to a “journalist” who uses different photos on various websites. The “journalist,” Emily Thompson, has published articles on three websites, including Eurasia Review (owned by a public relations company) and Spectator (a reputable news outlet). The gradual increase in her followers on X and her association with these media outlets suggest an effort to build credibility. Extensive background checks have failed to reveal any evidence of Emily Thompson’s existence as an academic or journalist with verifiable credentials. It appears a fake profile was created with generic articles to establish a veneer of trustworthiness for future use. Michalis Sirivianos, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at CUT, emphasizes the need for vigilance against such disinformation tactics and the ability of fake accounts to gain credibility both on social media platforms and among users.
