Dozens of Complaints Under Scrutiny at Audit Oversight Authority

Published January 12, 2026, 13:25

The Cyprus Public Audit Oversight Authority (ADEELEP) is dealing with dozens of complaints against audit firms, as stated by its Director-General, Panos Prodromitis, to the Finance Committee. The complaints originate from both the Authority's inspections and the Association of Certified Accountants of Cyprus (SELC) and are at various stages of review, including disciplinary proceedings and investigations. ADEELEP's budget for 2026 is balanced, amounting to €1.9 million, funded by the Republic of Cyprus and recognized audit bodies. A significant development is the signing of a cooperation agreement with the corresponding US authority, facilitating capital raising for Cypriot companies and enhancing Cyprus's credibility. Additionally, in 2025, a disciplinary sanction was imposed on an audit firm for the first time, with a fine of €60,000. ADEELEP is in consultation to amend the Auditors' Law, aiming to expedite disciplinary procedures by introducing a conciliation process and automating the imposition of penalties. It is also collaborating with SELC to address ambiguities in the law. The global conference of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR) Inspection Workshop is expected to be held in Limassol in March, a significant event during the Cypriot Presidency of the EU. The event is included in the Authority's budget.
