Drousiotis: Consumers Oppose €3 Fee on Online Purchases – When Will the EU Decision Be Implemented?

The President of the Cypriot Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, expressed consumer opposition to the upcoming imposition of a €3 fee per product on online purchases from third countries, which will be implemented in the summer. The EU decision, made despite objections from European consumer associations, primarily targets the Temu and Shein platforms. Mr. Drousiotis estimated that the fee will be charged at the time of purchase, as managing it through customs authorities would be costly and bureaucratic. According to the decision, the fee will be applied even to products worth €1, resulting in a €15 charge for a package containing 5 items. The Consumers Association had voiced its opposition to the decision, believing it harms consumers and serves the interests of traders. It is estimated that the platforms will absorb the tax cost, increasing product prices for the end consumer.
