Drousiotis: EU's €3 Fee on Purchases from Third Countries Will Burden Consumers

The President of the Cypriot Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, stated that the EU's decision to impose a €3 fee on purchases from third countries will burden consumers. The fee will take effect in the summer and primarily targets platforms like Temu and Shein. Mr. Drousiotis estimates that the fee will be charged at the time of purchase, as managing it through customs authorities would be costly and bureaucratic. The fee will be applied to each product, even if its value is less than €3, resulting in a significant fee for a package containing multiple low-cost items. The Consumers Association had expressed its opposition to the decision, believing it harms consumers, but was not heeded. It is expected that the platforms will absorb the cost of the fee and pass it on to consumers through price increases.
