El Salvador's President Open to Remaining in Power for Another Decade

The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has stated he would be open to remaining in power for another decade, despite constitutional challenges regarding his current second term. Bukele, who enjoys high popularity due to his hardline stance against gangs and the resulting reduction in crime, had initially agreed with his wife to leave politics in 2029. However, the parliament, controlled by his party, has already revised the Constitution to remove term limits and allow him to run for a third term. Despite criticism of human rights violations, Bukele assures that he does not seek dictatorship and that the choice will remain with the voters.
