Electricity in Cyprus: A Call for Strategic Restructuring

Cyprus is facing a crisis in the electricity sector, with major projects such as the introduction of natural gas and the interconnection with Crete being uncertain due to legal investigations. Existing policies are inadequate and are leading to price increases and power outages. The new Minister of Energy is called upon to restructure the sector, addressing the lack of long-term strategic planning. The delay in the arrival of natural gas has already cost hundreds of millions of euros, while the interconnection project with Crete faces geopolitical risks and technical difficulties. Furthermore, there is a shortage in electricity production due to the dependence of new units on natural gas. The lack of integration of innovative practices in the Cypriot market and public administration is slowing down the development of the sector.
