Environmental Commissioner Intervenes in Marine Turtle Handling Incident in Chloraka

The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, has expressed strong disapproval of the handling of a marine turtle by employees of the Chloraka Community Council. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but Ms. Theodosiou emphasized that even if the turtle was already dead, the behavior was unacceptable. She reminded of the clear procedures that must be followed in such cases, such as immediately informing the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research for a cause of death investigation and proper burial. The Commissioner pointed out that there are guidelines and protocols for handling dead turtles, while stressing the need for training of local authority staff to avoid similar incidents that undermine marine life protection.
