Erdogan: Israel's Recognition of Somaliland is Illegal and Unacceptable

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel's recognition of Somaliland, calling it “illegal and unacceptable” and warning of potential destabilization in the region. The statement was made during a joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, where Erdogan emphasized Ankara's priority in maintaining the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia. Erdogan accused Israel, specifically the Netanyahu government, of seeking to destabilize the Horn of Africa after its actions in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Qatar and Syria. At the same time, he announced that Turkey plans to begin offshore drilling off the coast of Somalia in 2026, with the addition of two new floating drilling rigs to the Turkish fleet. Turkey has already condemned Israel's recognition of Somaliland as a “blatant interference” in Somalia's internal affairs. Ankara provides military and economic support to the official government of Somalia, which faces chronic political instability and attacks from Islamist rebels. Somaliland declared its independence in 1991, but has not been recognized by any other country except Israel. It remains a relatively stable region compared to the rest of Somalia, but remains politically and economically isolated due to its strategic location in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
