Erdogan-Mitsotakis Meeting Scheduled for February – Turkey Seeks Permanent Aegean Solution

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that a meeting between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kyriakos Mitsotakis will take place in February, with dates still being finalized. According to Fidan, the goal of the meeting is to achieve a permanent solution to issues in the Aegean Sea, including territorial waters and the continental shelf, as well as to avoid involvement in external policy matters. Furthermore, Fidan expressed Turkey's opposition to any US military intervention in Iran, emphasizing that Tehran should resolve its internal problems independently. He also warned about the negative consequences of large-scale instability in Iran, which would be difficult for the region to manage. Regarding Syria, Fidan stated that Turkey hopes for a peaceful resolution but does not rule out the use of force by the Syrian government. He stressed the need to implement the March 10th agreement and called on the Kurdish forces YPG/SDF to seek a diplomatic solution. Finally, he mentioned talks for a potential defense agreement with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, describing regional cooperation and trust as essential for resolving problems in the area. This potential collaboration has been labeled by some as an “Islamic NATO”.
