EU-Mercosur Agreement: Blow to Producers and Import of Questionable Quality Products

The approval of the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement is causing strong reactions in Cyprus, particularly from agricultural organizations and representatives of the primary sector. Critics express serious concerns about food safety, environmental protection, and the sustainability of local agriculture. They point out that the agreement allows the import of products from countries that do not adhere to strict European regulations regarding pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms, creating unfair competition. The President of Panagrotikos, Kyriakos Kailas, describes the agreement as "disastrous" for European farmers, emphasizing that the increased production costs due to European regulations make local producers less competitive. He believes that the quotas provided to protect European producers are insufficient and that even small imports of products at lower prices can cause significant damage to domestic production. Furthermore, the need for a level playing field is highlighted, either through the prohibition of imports of products that do not meet European regulations or through the removal of restrictions on European producers. However, the latter option is considered dangerous to public health. The agreement is seen as another blow to the primary sector, which already faces significant challenges such as drought and bureaucratic obstacles. The Secretary-General of the EKA, Panikos Chabas, agrees with these concerns, emphasizing the risk to food safety and consumer health. The agreement will be discussed in the European Parliament, and Cypriot farmers expect their concerns to be voiced and measures taken to protect their interests.
