EU-Mercosur Deal to be Signed Today

The European Union and Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) are set to sign a significant trade agreement today in Asunción, Paraguay. The agreement, discussed since 1999 and approved in January, has sparked controversy and will be put to a vote in the European Parliament for final ratification. Simultaneously, 145 MEPs have requested the EU Court of Justice to review the agreement's legality, ensuring its compatibility with EU Treaties. The outcome of the European Parliament vote remains uncertain, as power dynamics may differ from the Council. The signing marks a crucial step, but the agreement's implementation hinges on the European Parliament's approval and the successful completion of legal reviews.
